I have a number of tools, mostly stamped with “Bealby, Collingham”. There are pit saws with full fittings, spoke planes, shaver planes, and other odd tools. I also have a coulter(spudder?) which I believe was used to clean the plough share.
In the 70’s I found the Cart in one of the sheds, and being concerned that it might deteriorate, agreed with my uncle that I should look after it. It has two 6ft wooden spoked wheels together with the original chain to haul the tree logs out of the forest.
My father told me that it was made in the 1890’s by two of the workshop plough makers. They had a competition to see who made the best wheel! I was told the name of each person but have forgotten.
In the 70’s I asked my father to see if he could locate an original Bealby plough. He contacted a gentleman called Charlie Sheldon, who he knew when he was a boy.
Charlie Shelton had two ploughs and sold both to my Father.
My father told me that his father (Walter) had a number of “Match Ploughs” which were used in competitions. I believe that when the brothers came home during WW2 on leave, they burnt the ploughs on the fire due to wood shortages.
